General Systems Analysis. Systems Science. Multi-, Inter-, Transdisciplinary Studies.

Sapienza provides research and understanding of synergies and complex interactions between science, technology, industry, economy, social change, international affairs, and policy as well as in emerging areas arising from these interactions.

The necessity to study and analyse new and complex dynamic situations is rapidly increasing as new paradigms are continuously and rapidly appearing and as traditional boundaries between science, technology, economics, engineering and social science are changing. Improving the understanding of synergies and complex interactions between science & technology, economy, and social change is particularly crucial for government agencies to establish efficient policy programs.

The resulting scenario makes urgent the analysis of systems concerned with rapid science & technology advancements and the way and extent in which they are entering into the industry and society, with the increasing international competition of firms, with market dynamics, with the necessity of managing complex network oriented organizations, with environment, energy, population, and with issues concerning investment and allocation of economic resources.

In this new environment, multi-, inter-, and transdisciplinary [1] approaches prove to be a major force in analysis of systems and problem solving in a broad and sometimes ill-defined context. Cross-fertilization of ideas among all the scientific disciplines and the exchange of concepts and techniques developed within areas traditionally seen as highly diverse are the foundation to tackle general systems analysis.

Complex systems, noise and fluctuations, nonlinear science, dynamic systems, statistics, systems analysis, integration, generalization and unifying theories, trans-contextual perspectives, multi-functional concepts, are some of the key ingredients associated to this new environment, and also both rigorous mathematical methods and new measurement approaches and techniques able to provide information about metrics in highly uncertain and "difficult to measure" [2] areas. At Sapienza we have the capability to address broad, unstructured, complex, ill-defined, multi, inter and transdisciplinary problems building on our mathematical background, scientific research track record, and analytical skills.

[1] Multidisciplinary analysis draws on the knowledge of several disciplines, each of which provides a different perspective on a problem or issues and is concerned with a holistic approach. Interdisciplinary analysis involves drawing on the specialized knowledge, concepts and tools of different disciplines and integrating these pieces to create new knowledge or deeper understanding. Transdisciplinary analysis is concerned with the unity of intellectual frameworks beyond the disciplinary perspectives.

[2] Systems difficult to measure refer to systems with a sheer complexity that makes it difficult to interpret measurements, involving many unpredictable components such as, for example, human actions and reactions, mobility patterns or variation in computing resources.

Challenging The Frontiers of Conventional Thinking
At Sapienza we are independent thinkers who have made breakthroughs elaborating theories in many different areas of physics. With actual capability to export them to other strategic fields, we help travel hot new paths you previously thought were impossible. And with the ability to come up with big ideas. Unmatched capacity, unequalled value, visionary conception, are keywords which describe us.
